The next morning, three Union soldiers arrive demanding food. He eventually meets a grieving young widow named Sara and her infant child Ethan, and stays the night at her cabin. An elderly hermit living in the woods finds Inman and nurses him back to health. Veasey and the group are killed in a skirmish with Union cavalry, while Inman is left for dead. Junior betrays them to the Confederate Home Guard, who take Inman and Veasey away along with other deserters.
They later meet a young man named Junior, and join him and his family for dinner. Exiled from his parish, Veasey joins Inman on his journey. But, as often happens in the adaptation of literary works, without the balance of the book's poetic language, the images tend to overwhelm the subtle issues it raises about great and small conflicts.
